Disorganized, messy and helpful

Having worked my way up to a level of expertise in computational mathematics where only obscure journal articles and academic compendiums can add anything to my knowledge, I find myself rarely being challenged. This book presented one, though not in the way I would hope.
A certain level of forgiveness for not having English as ones mother tongue should be granted for international works such as this, but this is beyond condoning. The unnecessary spelling and grammatical errors are punctuated only with incorrectly labeled graphs and incomplete and embarrassingly mistyped equations. The organization of knowledge presentation is abysmal, as entire concepts are referenced before later being introduced. But however frustrating the text itself may be, for a review of the application of this arcane topic, there is none better. The first seven chapters regarding the foundations of wavelets and neural networks are worthless; the last three justify the book's existence. The useful chapters cover important areas of use for wavenets, describing applicability and limitations, and even venture into cost calculations though stochastic learning (a rare gem indeed). Missing are critical references to base function selection, online updating, or optimization.
Overall, this book is not for the inexperienced. Ignore the first half of the book entirely, and read the latter selectively, if forgivingly.

Save yourself time and money and don't buy this book! This is an extremely boring book and I don't suggest it. Big waste of money! It is just common sense about wavelet and neural networks nothing new.

Amazing! nearly everything you need in one small book!

I am a cheif resident of neurology, and have been using this book to study for my RITE exam and boards. it has every key concept convered in well organized and easy to follow chapters. If your looking for the most possible information presented in the least amount of pages in a clear, concise manner, this is a wonderful book. The figures and tables are excellent and all in color! When supplementing this book with clinical cases and more in depth references, it can be a great guidline for any medical student, neurology resident or practicing neurologist.

concise but complete, a good fast consultation book

A good pocket book, useful for quick consultation and review of the principal features of most neurological conditions.
Chapters are well organized, easy to follow and complete despsite their concision. Tables and diagrams provide a fast and efficient review of principal differential diagnosis and therapies. Its extended list of references offers interesting cues to delve into.
Useful both for medical students and residents,as companion of a more extended textbook.

I am a medical student and used this book as a review for my Brain and Behavior course. It was excellent in preparing me for clinical scenarios. It is well written and concise. The pictures are very helpful. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the Neurology field interested in an excellent reference book.

Best book for modeling in STATA

This is an excellent econometrics book for people who want to USE econometrics and still understand, theoretically, the difference between the models. There are brief descriptions of the theory (including equations) about each model before a very detailed explanation about how to code the model into STATA. I've taken several Econometrics courses and, for me, the challenge has typically been, "yes, but how do I transform my data to do that in real life". Answers are here as long as you are comfortable with using the typical STATA manual instructions. I'd say the advantage of this book over the help manual is how nicely all the models are packaged together. I found myself simply reading through the book and trying models and robustness checks I might not have previously thought of. It covers everything from cross-sectional to panel, including bootstrapping and simulations. It also includes some handy graphing techniques.

Coupled with the help guide already installed in STATA 11, this book is perfect for taking data from a raw form and transferring it into the most up-to-date models. The applications go much further than a grad school textbook.

Should be Required Text for Econometrics Classes

This book is terrific. It provides a nice bridge between the Stata manuals and traditional econometrics textbooks (like Wooldridge or Greene). It gives details not only on the Stata commands, but also context for when you might choose different model specifications or tests.

The examples are great. For instance, in section 5.3 "Modeling heteroskedastic data" using GLS, the authors describe two different ways to deal with heteroskedasticity: robust standard errors and FGLS. First they walk you through creating a simulated dataset, performing OLS estimation, then performing OLS with heteroskedastic-robust standard errors (using the "robust" option), and compare the results. Next they show you how to plot the errors to visualize the nature of the heteroskedasticity, as well as how to perform different tests for heteroskedasticity in Stata (and which ones assume normality). Then they walk you through step-by-step how to implement FGLS (the second method), concluding with a discussion of how to augment FGLS with weighted least squares for robustness.

I love that it is concise but thorough, and very well organized. The cross-references help a lot when the authors refer to something that they've explained in more detail elsewhere.

I only wish I had discovered it during my first semester of graduate level econometrics. I highly recommend it, and think it would be great if professors required it (or at least encouraged their students to get it). It's appropriate for upper-level undergraduate or master's level econometrics classes.

I'm finishing up my undergraduate in econ, and I've been working really hard on doing applied research using Stata, and this book has been an absolute godsend. I'm taking Econometrics right now, and I have an actual textbook for the class, but I decided to buy this book too, and it has explained Stata better than either my professor or textbook has at all. There's a massive amount of information to the book, but thanks to incredibly good organization, and a detailed index, the book works great for either either reference or reading cover to cover

The Edogawa Rampo Reader

I feel like i have been waiting for this book for all of my life. it has been a slow amount of time to get the Japanese writer Edogawa Rampo translated into English. One of his collections of short stories have been in print for so many years - yet waiting for another title seemed endless. Now we have at least three other books by Rampo, and I bought them all this year.

"The Edogawa Rampo Reader" is a much needed over-all look of his career. The first half of this book is short stories and the second half are essays -mostly regarding the nature of the 'detective' story. i only found one essay the most interesting and that's "The Horror Of Films" dealing with the nature and history of cinema. It's a great piece on what was then a new medium. He wrote it in 1926, and for a short essay it covers a lot of ground. Basically all to do with being the viewer.

The short stories are all in the creepy mode that I love about Rampo's work. It includes the story about a man who spends a lot of time in the attic where he spies on people down below, and also commits a murder. The long introduction by Seth Jacobowitz is pretty perfect in capturing what is so essential about Rampo, his times, and the work itself. A remarkable writer.

Excellent book for the beginner

This book is an excellent book for a beginner in mushroom identification or a casual nature-lover. The colour photographs are pleasing to look at, which is always a bonus for a beginner; and the science is easy. It even has a section with recipes for any good fungi you find.
The points it falls down on are its lack of text detail about each fungus, it does not include gill type or smell etc. Also the key is not suitable for use in the field because the spore colour is a major part of it, which is not readily observed in the field. But of course this isn't really a field guide, it is far too big to take out(although having said that I have done so).
Overall this is a very good book.

Great starter book

I bought another book on mushroom identification at the bookstore. I didnt "plan" to buy it when I was there but I had always been secretly curious about wild mushrooms. That first book wasn't all that good so it led me to the local library in search of better illustrated and more detailed mushroom books. This book has great pictures and discriptions. I was simply amazed at the amount and quality of wild mushrooms available close to my home. As it turns out this is one book that is directly related to my new mushroom collecting obsession. In a very short time I was comfortably collecting many varieties of wild mushrooms. Now, I want this copy for myself!

The Bride Quest begins

Princess Brianna is stunned when her father's castle, Tullymullagh, is overtaken in a siege. She is horrified when King Henry declares she must wed one of the three sons of the mercenary, Gavin Fitzgerald, who conquered them. Brianna swears she "will wed only my one true love." So she sends the brothers on a quest. Whoever of the three that brings her a gift to make her laugh the longest is the one she will wed.

Luc Fitzgavin, the eldest, refuses to go on her foolish quest, infuriating Brianna to no end. He has but one desire, to receive the seal on his beloved Welsh estate, from his brutish father. Luc was once a great knight, who swore to give up his sword forever, after living through a great tragedy brought about by another's dishonorable intentions. He scorns the selfish Brianna's whim, believing her full of nonsense. But as he gets to know her, he starts to realize there is more to her than he previously thought. And he begins to realize much more is at stake here...his very heart.

Brianna and Luc are drawn to each other for reasons they can't understand. For Brianna is on a quest of her own: To return Tullymullagh to its rightful owner, her father. So he can live out his days in the home he built. Luc desires only to return to his beloved home in peace. Until suspicious events start to make them realize danger abounds. The two of them unite to try to solve the mysteries. Soon, it is evident someone wishes to harm them both. Rumors start to surface of a great treasure kept hidden, The Rose of Tullymullagh, and someone is determined to have the legendary piece for their very own.

Ms. Delacroix tries to write a great adventure and mystery here, but falls short in this reviewer's opinion. Brianna comes across as a spoiled little girl who can't stand to not always get her way. She does somewhat redeem herself in the end, but not quite enough. She also comes across as not being the brightest crayon in the box. There are a few instances where the reader is in total disbelief that she cannot see the obvious. The mystery was not much of one as it was figured out almost immediately upon being presented.

When the body count starts stacking up, the plot becomes contrived. It is almost as if Ms. Delacroix was running out of story and had to kill a few people to make her word count. But there are a few bright spots to the story. Luc comes across as a noble and honorable man, determined to do what is right and good, and to protect his lady at any cost. There are also some very funny scenes scattered throughout.

This tale drags at many points and is not one of Ms. Delacroix's best. It was almost a chore to even finish the book. Having read several other of her books, one can only hope this book is just a fluke and the rest of the Bride Quest series is better.

Not my type of story

I was really looking forward to this book, and the entire 'bride quest'series, but I didn't like most of the characters in 'The Princess'. I found Brianna a lukewarm heroine at best, throughout the book her childish efforts to deliberately misunderstand everything happening around her were exhausting. I did like the hero, Luc, and Ms. Delacroix wasted a fine character by inserting him into this slow-moving story. By the time the murders began, I was scanning each paragraph for the main idea and wishing the action would speed up, or the whole thing would just come to an end. Although I didn't like this story, I am going to try again with 'The Damsel' and 'The Heiress' and see if the 'bride quest' gets any better.

To win a princess...deny her quest

Brianna, an innocent princess fighting to save what her father worked all his life to build, sends three brothers out on a quest, but Luc, one of the brothers, was not going to have any of it. Brianna's trust in Luc was almost immediate, though. Maybe it was because he answered all her questions, truthfully, for the price of a "kiss". (so, of course, she asked a lot of questions). As for Connor, he taught his daughter a great lesson in love. A romance story within a romance story, how quaint. I enjoyed the book. Great writing Ms. Delacroix. My favorite of the 3.

This volume reviews the microtextural literature of the last twenty-five years since the publication of Sand Grain Surface Texures by D.H. Krinsley and J. For over four decades, the SEM has proved itself to be the instrument of choice in the analysis of microstructures, whether they be mineral collages or intergrowths, whole grain or partial grain microfeatures including microtextures, dissolution characteristics and/or precipitates-coatings of various thicknesses and compositions. Its high resolution stereo imagery, coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry, provides a level of compositional analysis that far exceeds the traditional light microscope. With magnifications from 25 to 100,000X, virtually the surface of any molecular structure can be seen and studied from microphotographs or electronic imagery together with printouts from an interlinked energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Offering an expanded list of microtextures, new interpretations of them and an assessment of how they may be used to discriminate sedimentary environments, this volume builds on the original "Atlas" and the work of practitioners worldwide. Including engineering tests designed to reproduce "glacial grains" under controlled conditions in the laboratory, new information on microtextures of heavy minerals, applications in the earth, forensic, archaeologic, and nutrition sciences, together with the use of the secondary and CL modes of the SEM, this book is a state-of-the-art presentation of where sand grain microfeature analysis lies at present and where it intends to go in the future.

Outstanding book - quality of book and contents excellent

I consider this an excellent book. The quality of its construction and of its contents are both outstanding.

The book was written for those who need to know about SEM analysis of surface textures of sand grains and I am not one of those. So my opinions are from a different point of view than the books intended audience. I deal with microscopic analysis of the surface textures of sand grains and the upper limits of what is illustrated in this book is about the lower limits of what I can see. However, one of the reasons I deal with surface textures is to help in determin the origin and transport history of sand grains and for this purpose the organization of the book is excellent. The photographs are clear, the vocubulary explained and there are ample expamples of the various surface features discussed. If you want to know what a particular surface texture looks like, that is in front part of the book. If you want to know what surface textures are found on rocks of a particular orign, that is in the back part of the book.. This two fold organization makes the book doubly useful.

I expect it to become one of the most valuable books in my library.
