About the Author
American writer and publisher LAURON WILLIAM DE LAURENCE (1868-1936) was a prolific author of works on spiritualism and the occult. His other works include The Great Book of Hindu Magic (1904), The Master Key (1914), and Clairvoyance, Thought Transference, Auto Trance, and Spiritualism (1916).

English naturalist ALFRED RUSSEL WALLACE (1823-1913) also wrote Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection (1870), The Geographical Distribution of Animals (1876), and Darwinism (1889).

Mislabeled

I bought this to study the connection between Hindu & Egyptian mysticism and mirror mythology, but was very disappointed. It's mostly wishy-washy vagaries about getting a person in touch with the astral plane. There's very little reliable referencing to actual ancient beliefs, and instead sounds more like Delaurence was attempting to fuse different systems he'd studied into some new, simplified route to "enlightenment". It would be more appropriate to call it "The Wanna-Be-Genuine Psychics Text Book". Who knows, maybe those looking for such a book would benefit.

Classic Occult Literature

This was an excellent book. I think it is a classic of occult literature. Kessinger has exactly captured the original even with orginal graphics. L.W. DeLaurence was a true mystic in his day, and this book is an excellent example of the prevailing practices and mystic thoughts of the early 20th Century. It is not a flashy book with color photos but it teaches solid practices for any aspiring occultist. If you wish to truly develop your clairvoyant abilities, this book may prove very helpful.

One of the best scholars on short story theory

This is not the first time I read Charles E. May. I had read two other articles from "The New Short Story Theories", edited by himself: "The Nature of Knowledge in Short Fiction" and "Chekhov and the Modern Short Story". Both articles and this book I've just bought are being very useful and helpful in the writings of my master's degree thesis on "The genre problem and the short-short story". Charles E. May is a great scholar on short story theory. He goes deep but is very clear in what he writes. I am very thankful to him.

Many dramatic encounters (not with aliens or spirits, but with everyday people) have shaped him and he wouldn't have missed any of it. Dov's story is intensely personal and honest, with a powerful combination of humour, emotion and community history. OUT OF LINE attempts to do a few short things. It is an autobiography but it is also an attempt to capture a particular history of a specific generation; that of the Jewish baby boomers who descended from mainly Lithuanian stock. Dov has been a leading South African cartoonist for more than 45 years, and his earliest dream was to work for Walt Disney. He has always known his career was somewhere in drawing. He got to visit Disney World and could not wait to leave. He has never been to Europe or Brakpan and is a pure product of Johannesburg. The last on his wish list was to become a political cartoonist.

Perry Wilson is a Canadian author based in Vancouver, BC who has big ideas and an itch to tell stories. Having spent some time on university, a career, and life in general, she returned to writing three years ago and hasn't looked back since (well, maybe a little, but only while parallel parking).

She also writes the Quinn Larson urban fantasy novels, and the Madeline Journeys, a high fantasy series.

Woman-Trafficking in Vancouver B.C.

I didn't realise until I finished this book that it is the first in a new series, I felt as if I had just zapped into the middle of a long-running soap opera. I am not criticising, I liked that. There were no lengthy introductions or descriptions of the people or the places, just straight in at the deep end. There is a murder in the third paragraph and from then on the excitement never lets up.

Val, the teenage prostitute whose sister has disappeared (been disappeared!) is a character I shall never forget. And as for Charity Deacon, the PI who also waits table and is not afraid to take on one of the nastiest sets of woman-trafficking thugs I have ever come across in a book or in a film (or, thank God, in real life), I loved her and I am just waiting to read the second in the series, which is apparently set in France, instead of the author's and Charity's home-town of Vancouver.

Hubris by PA Wilson is a superb book. The characters are well developed. I particularly loved private investigator Charity Deacon and Val, the teenage prostitute determined to find her sister. This story of thee women/girls standing up to gangs who are engaged in human trafficking is fast paced and engaging. It would be a tremendously good TV movie. An added bonus was the book took place in one of my favourite cities. Bottom line: I highly recommend this book. I personally will be reading more by PA Wilson.

Very readable whodunit - fast paced w. likable characters

Charity Deacon is a PI with a tendency to act first and ask questions later. She's also not great at planning exit strategies. Both traits tend to get her into trouble; luckily she thinks fast on her feet! It is a stretch to think that a murder she witnesses and a plea from a young prostitute to help find her sister might be related, but Charity somehow thinks they are. Hubris is all she has to fight the bad guys/gals, and the outcome is way more than she (or the police) expect. Definitely a good read!

Updated classic--Inadequate Value for the Money

It's hard to give the appropriate number of stars to this edition. On the one hand, this is one of the classics of the field, and deservedly so. In it's first edition, this may have been the first great book on testing, and there is something about the "first great book" on any topic that makes it a lasting value decades later: DeMarco on Structured Analysis, Brooks on the wicked complexity of software project management, Booch on object-oriented design, K&R on C. And so I think it goes with The Art of Software Testing. It's a short book, and full of good ideas that will stay with you.

But.

This revised edition is simply a terrible value. At the full list price, you'd be paying something like fifty cents a page...and, let me tell you, a book had better revolutionize my life for that kind of money. I'm a dedicated capitalist sell-out software developer, but this kind of pricing arouses even _my_ hacker sensibilities. Also, the value of the revision is questionable: there may be a chapter on Extreme Programming, but it seems to me that the best material in this book is still the classic text that survives from the 1st ed. So, my recommendation is that you simply _buy_ the first edition, new or used, at a fraction of the price. Then, you get nearly all of the benefit, plus the cachet of having the "classic" on your shelf. You can put it right next to "The C Programming Language" and "The Mythical Man-Month." Then, your visitors will know you're a serious software developer...and, you know what? They'll probably be right.

I also like and recommend Kaner, Falk and Nguyen, "Testing Computer Software," for a more in-depth and up-to-date treatment of testing issues.

Major Rewrite for 2nd ed.

After 25 years of influencing test professionals this classic has been updated in the second edition to reflect contemporary testing challenges. Note that this review is for ISBN 0471469122.
The first three chapters have kept their titles, but have been greatly expanded. For example, chapter 2 now includes black- and white-box testing overviews in addition to discussions on economics and testing principles. Chapter 3 now covers error types in addition to the original topics related to inspections and walkthroughs. Among the error types discussed are data reference and declaration, computation, comparison, control flow, and interface and I/O.
Test case design has been expanded, and the chapters on module and high-order testing, and debugging have been given major facelifts and much wider coverage of techniques. The most significant changes, though, are chapters 8 and 9, Extreme Testing and Internet Testing, which truly reflect the extent of this book's update for the second edition.
While the update is extensive, the part I personally liked the most is in Chapter 6, High-Order Testing. Consider these new test types, some of which were not even considered a part of testing back in 1979 when the first edition was published: facility, volume, stress, usability, security, performance, storage, configuration, compatibility/configuration/conversion, installability, reliability, recovery, serviceability, documentation, and procedure testing.
This book belongs in every serious test professional's library. I'm retiring my copy of the first edition, a book that I've used since the early 1980s, to a special place in my library reserved for classic books. This second edition will be one of my primary testing references for some time to come.

The basic text for software testing

The Art of Software Testing provides the novice with the essentials for developing and implementing a comprehensive testing approach. It's also a valuable resource for those with experience. I dive into this book constantly.

The premise is simple enough: How can you write effective test cases that adequately exercise your system requirements? Myers suggests that good software testing depends on the answer. Testing what the program is supposed to do is only part of the battle. However, in my experience, this is usually where we plant our flag. This can be difficult enough, depending on the quality of the criteria. Bad or vague requirements necessarily lead to insufficient and flawed testing.

As a result negative testing, boundary testing, testing for unexpected conditions, and so forth will often go by the wayside.

In addition, testing is often presented as a gateway to production, and can be cursory as a result. The creativity and time that adequate test cases demand are simply not within project scope. This is often exacerbated by intent to pass systems without finding errors.

Myers addresses these issues as he explores test planning and creation. Hence this book really belongs on the shelves, not only of software testers, but project management as well. The methodology of requirements-based testing is not new. However the profession is growing and more sectors are discovering the need for testing their systems. Art of Software Testing is still relevant and should be promulgated.
