Best Book on Self-Publishing that I have ever read.

There are a lot of great things I could say about this book. It's funny. It's informative. Rather than going through a bullet point list of its many merits, let me focus on the quality that I enjoyed most.

The best thing about this book, to me, is that it is devoted to teaching you how to think. You won't find screenshots teaching you how to format your files for the different online retailers or step-by-steps walking you through how to fill out a product description. The advice in this book will not only help you today, but years from now. I feel confident saying that because the focus is on how to approach situations. It will show you what type of thinking and the attitude you should as you try to build a career. They will teach you how to CREATE opportunities (they are serious about the 'no luck' part) for yourself.

In this book, Sean, Johnny and Dave advocate a systemic and repeatable approach that takes the guesswork out of being an author. The work ethic and can-do attitude that fills every page appeals to me so much. It's inspirational and motivational. Reading the book really makes you believe that it's possible to approach a writing career as a business person instead of that guy risking everything on a roll of the dice. You don't have to hope and pray that you get lucky. There is a line in the early part of the book that says: "Success comes from hard work and the accumulation of small numbers." That is such an awesome sentence, but more than that, it's an awesome philosophy.

Ultimately, that's what this book is about. It teaches you how to win a lot of small battles that have the cumulative effect of leading you to a life of victory. If you want to learn how to make it as a self-published author, do yourself a favor and buy this book. Read this book and keep it close by so you can read it again.

Long-winded, Self-Indulgent, Not for Romance Authors

I've read several books on self-publishing and I've picked up several tips from most all of them. The best tip I got from this one is to put links for your other books in the back of the book. Gee! Brilliant, right? Reading this book I felt like I was listening to a bunch of guys sitting around enjoying hearing themselves talk. Ad nauseum. Guys who are quite in love with themselves and super proud of the fact that they wouldn't get a real job even if their family needed them to (I feel so sorry for their wives.) They even spent a whole chapter on social media telling us why they aren't going to talk about social media. (because they don't know anything about it. Hello, that could have been said in a sentence, not a whole chapter.) This book desperately needed a good editor, preferably one outside their "fan club."

I am sure that fans of their podcast will LOVE this book, and that is their audience. But if you are looking to publish romance this is not the book for you. Why? One of the authors of the book on self-publishing romance tells us she makes 30% of her income from foreign markets while these guys say - foreign markets aren't worth your time. Don't bother. Really? In this global economy with the increase expected in eBook sales in India? Really? They continually talk about their slutty friend (their words, not mine) who writes erotica, but rather than offering us any gems one can use (besides FREE books, another brilliant tidbit), it comes off more like an episode of Beavis & Butthead develop a crush on the cheerleader next door with the bad reputation. These guys sound like they are very successful authors and I wish them all the best. I just won't be reading any more of their books. Not for me.

IMO, the best book on self-publishing.

I have a pretty popular blog on self-publishing, and I've written a couple of books on the topic myself - meaning I've read a lot on the topic and come across lots of different strategies and approaches to building a loyal audience. For my money, this is the best book on self-publishing out there.

It doesn't matter if you are a beginner, someone who has published a few books, or have a lot of experience, you will get a huge amount from this book, which is jam-packed with all sorts of useful information. It's like a How To on how to build a publishing empire. I had several lightbulb moments reading this book, and I know you will too.

These guys know what they are talking about, they have published millions of words, self-published to great success, sold a series to Amazon, and built a loyal readership that will follow them anywhere.

And they tell you how to do it too. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy.

EDIT: I received an ARC of this book, but without any agreement to review, let alone give any certain type of review. I receive tons of ARCs all the time and most never even get read, let alone reviewed...

A terrific, trustworthy, one-stop guide to all types of writing.

I have taught writing for many years and can truly say that this book stands alone as a one-stop resource for the wide array of contemporary writing situations. Insecure or inexperienced writers will find a clear, comprehensive, approachable guide that can immediately boost their proficiency and confidence. More experienced writers will appreciate side bars like the concise “dos and don’ts.” When we're under deadline pressure, such handy lists of correctives can save time and relieve stress. I was also impressed with Brown’s thorough, well-researched guide to digital writing. She captures the nuances of navigating social media. A handsome book as well, this makes a great gift. I bought it for a recent college grad just entering the workplace.

A must have reference book!

Communication is always going to be important no matter how technically advanced our society gets or what new products are invented. Writing is fundamental to so many aspects of life and Laura Brown's new book is a comprehensive guide to how to write effectively. Don't assume that your child has learned this skill in high school or even college. In law school, I was the TA for a first year legal writing class. I was amazed at the poor writing skills demonstrated so many students who had graduated from top tier colleges. This book makes a wonderful graduation gift and should have its place next to the dictionary and thesaurus in every home.

This is the only book that I know of that gives specific guidance for how to write everything from a business letter to a love letter, from a college application essay to a press release. What's so great about the book is that although it is comprehensive in scope, it is accessible in tone and layout. The book is easy to read and very well organized. I highly recommend it!

About the Author

Sudharman K. Jayaweera earned his BE in Electrical Engineering from the University of Melbourne, Australia. He earned his MA and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University, USA. He is currently an Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering at the University of New Mexico, USA. His research expertise is in signal processing and wireless communications.
Dr. Jayaweera is a senior member of the IEEE. Currently he serves as the Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology and as a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Open Signal Processing Journal.

Should be required reading for high schoolers

I have read a lot of self-help and relationship books, but this one really stands out.

I can't imagine anyone reading and applying the information in this book and NOT having a peaceful, loving, satisfying married life.

It is simple, but not easy, but Gary Chapman practices what he preaches (and sometimes fails, as he relates in his personal anecdotes).

Anyone can have a happy marriage, but both spouses need to agree on the rules, and this is a great guidebook.

Great advice for marriage

Every relationship needs a Christian tune-up and this book was it. It teaches what marriage is in the eyes of God, and helped my husband and I get over the hump. For a couple that needs to have a faith fill recharge twice a year, this was an enormous help. I plan on continueing to add to our library. Sometimes a couple just need to be able to look unselfishly at their lives and marriage using sound biblical teachings and advice.

Outstanding book

If you have ever attended Gary's 4 part lecture series and wanted it in book form, here it is. This is his primary work that goes well beyond the 5 Love Languages (although he does briefly touch on those here). This is primary written for people who are already married. His book, "The Things I wish I Knew Before I Married" is probably better for those who are engaged.

The 26 characters in this rhythmic, rhyming baby book are a lowercase alphabet with attitude. "A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"--which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. Lois Ehlert's chunky block illustrations show the luxuriant green palm standing straight and tall on the first page, but it begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka... BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath. A very simple board-book version stops there, but this original text goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts." In this bright and lively rhyme, the letters of the alphabet race each other to the top of the coconut tree. When X, Y and Z finally scramble up the trunk, however, the weight is too much, and down they all tumble in a colorful chaotic heap: "Chicka Chicka . . . BOOM! BOOM!" All the family members race to help, as one by one the letters recover in amusingly battered fashion. Poor stubbed toe E has a swollen appendage, while F sports a jaunty Band-Aid and P is indeed black-eyed. As the tropic sun goes down and a radiant full moon appears, indomitable A leaps out of bed, double-daring his colleagues to another treetop race. This nonsense verse delights with its deceptively simple narrative and with the repetition of such catchy phrases as "skit skat skoodle doot." Ehlert's bold color scheme, complete with hot pink and orange borders, matches the crazy mood perfectly. Children will revel in seeing the familiar alphabet transported into this madcap adventure. Amusing book for baby!

I first heard of this book when a mom was reading to her child out loud. My husband and I thought, what a weird book about coconut trees and alphabets. We thought she made it up.

Enter baby and when we shopped for books this was a bestseller. We bought it and couldn't believe that was the story the mom recited! To my surprise, it was the only book that held my newborns attention. To this day -- now 6 months -- she is still captivated by the book images and rhythm. Favorite book for baby!

My 3 month old loves it!

My 3 month old is captivated! I'm not sure if she's making the connection to the letters, words, or the fact that I'm reading it, but she scans every page! The board book is sturdy and easy to handle, so I let my girl hold it and play with the pages as well.
