New life for the Assassins!

YES! I cannot tell you how happy this book makes me.

Toni Aleo and the Assassins have returned and I’m so damn excited. You may be thinking….but the Assassins haven’t left…the last book Face-Off at the Altar was about the Assassins. Right? Well, when I say they’ve returned I mean Toni has revived this series for me in a big way. I was almost ready to say that it was time for me and this series to part ways.

Before you start burning things and throwing stuff my direction, let me explain…

I’ve been a fan of the Assassins and of Toni Aleo’s writing for a long time, but I don’t think I’ve made any secret of the fact that the Sinclair’s as a whole were not my favorite people (I’m giving a pass to Jace in that statement). I also hated Jordie Thomas with an unholy passion… I know a lot of people loved Jordie…he just ticked me right off… a lot. Let’s just leave it at I was starting to worry that the Assassins draw may have been coming to a close for me.

But, I have to give kudos to Toni. She has resurrected my love for the Assassins with this story of Vaughn and Brie. I am in awe yet again and my faith is restored. I loved this book from beginning to end. I’m not saying that Vaughn didn’t have his issues…don’t we all. But the whole background for this story was what convinced me to give the Assassins one more chance. And I’m so glad I did!

Brie is my newest favorite heroine. She is such a great character to read. She is what we should be raising our daughters to be. She holds herself to an incredibly high standard in her job, in how she takes care of her brother Rod and how she allows herself to be treated by others. The scene with the speed dating had me laughing out loud. There was a time or two that I thought she might have been edging into fighting her attraction to Vaughn a little too hard, but she never fell into where I thought she was just fighting it to be stubborn. She had some legitimate concerns.

Vaughn on the other hand, did actually make me cuss him out a few times. I get he’s not had the best history with people he’d chosen to trust, but it’s pretty obvious that Brie is nothing like the people in his past. I was a little irritated that he was ruining a fantastic thing with Brie just because he was gun shy. And he fought those feelings for Brie hard. Only the depth of his love for his brother and how he chose to express it was what kept the balance between what seemed like two separate personalities and ended up just making me love him more. But damn, that man is a stubborn bastard.

Like a lot of Aleo’s books, this book sets up a whole cast of new characters I can honestly say that I am looking forward to meeting again. I haven’t been this excited for a new book in this series since Laces and Lace. Fantastic writing, fun banter between Vaughn and Brie and a list of other characters who are lovable to the extreme. I’m not so patiently waiting to find out what happens from here. Delayed Call has breathed new life into this series for me.

Another great addition to the series

Delayed Call was the eleventh book in the Assassins series by Toni Aleo revolving around the Nashville NHL team.

Vaughn Johansson was the star forward with the killer wrister. He was gorgeous, the jokester and never took anything seriously. Yet, we found that he also had a heart of gold but he came with a ton of baggage.

Brie Soledad was the beautiful Assassins reporter that got under Vaughn's skin. Or was it that Vaughn got under Brie's skin...yea that too and they fought like cats and dogs.

True to Aleo's style, she sent us on a journey of discovery and healing before Vaughn and Brie could truly move forward. And for extra enjoyment, several of our favorite characters from the previous books made appearances.

The storyline was well written with well developed characters. The only major drawback was the editing errors. There were more than I felt was acceptable; focusing primarily on missing, extra or incorrect words.

Additionally, I liked the premise of the story but Vaughn and Brie were a little immature for me. Although they were NA so it was somewhat refreshing to see the lighthearted humor from an innocent age. Not my typical humor but it worked ok for me most of the time.

Within the storyline, Aleo tackled the tough subject of Down's syndrome including the challenges, affects upon the family, the ongoing decisions and the associated costs. It brought depth and complexity to the storyline. I'm not intimately familiar with Down's syndrome but it appeared realistic from a possible perspective. I would imagine in today's society that it could be a hot bed for abuse and fraud if the right options aren't thoroughly explored. Through Aleo's writing, I could feel Brie's anxiety over making the best long term decisions for her brother; yet to also stay within her budget and not send them into bankruptcy.

Lastly, I loved how Aleo intertwined plots from different series. You don't have to read them all in order to follow along, but it's a bonus to her loyal readers. It's like an inside joke. In Delayed Call, it took me awhile to realize that one of the subplots, Wells, Vaughn and Jensen's best friend, was one of those bonus treats. Wells ex was Matty, Audrey's troubling brother in Hooked by Love (book three, Bellevue Bullies). I'm expecting a book for Wells now, but I'm not sure which series we'll see it in or exactly how it will play out.

What was obvious was that Delayed Call was a total set up for Jensen and Wren, which I'm assuming will be the next book in the series. I'm not a huge fan of either one yet so I'm hoping they will get grit and strength once their own story is revealed.

All in all, Delayed Call was entertaining. I continued to enjoy Aleo's writing style and character development. Kudos to Aleo for adding another good story to the series.

5 He's Not Who He Appears To Be Stars!!!

I LOVE the Nashville Assassins and I LOVE this book!! This book centers around Vaughn Johansson and Brie Soledad and their love/hate relationship. You know what they say about those kind of relationships don't you? They're ON FIRE in the bedroom... and in this case, it's spot on!!! However, it takes a while for them to get to the bedroom...

This book moves at just the right pace for these two. They each have secrets they're hiding and/or dealing with and let me tell you there are times in this book that you'll be gutted. Vaughn in all his smart-mouthed ways has some history that only a few are privileged to know about and when it comes to Brie uses this to his advantage and knows what buttons to push with her and he does such a good job of it....

"You're weird around her. It's like you want to hate her, but you want to bang her - maybe even more than just bang and you don't like that."

Brie is so awesome in the way she handles Vaughn especially once these two get behind closed doors! She's smart, sexy, intelligent and has a heart of pure gold and he just doesn't know what to do with that. One of the things I loved the most about Brie is her relationship with Rodney her younger brother who needs to be cared for/monitored on a consistent basis. When it comes to Vaughn she doesn't let him get away with anything and I want to fist-bump her because of that. Even though he's amazing on the ice it doesn't give him license to not respect her or others...but we do get to find out why and how he is this way....and it blew me away!!!

Once there is an ignition for these two it's almost like they can't keep their hands off each other and at times I was rolling with them...Vaughn comes out of left field sometimes I'd sit here and think, "No, he didn't just say that...did he?" But he did Brie takes in stride.

Overall this another winner and dare I say Hat Trick for the Nashville Assassins series. Toni has captured these characters perfectly. This includes all the secondary characters, like Jensen, Wren, Wells and others and let's not forget Tricksie because she adds a whole different element to this story and it was the best!! I can't wait to see what happens in the future for this couple because their life together is going to be one heck of a ride!

Invaluable radiographic reference!

Although the title of this book sounds extremely dry, unapproachable, and cumbersome, this book is a well-organized compilation of every type of unusual looking radiograph for every part of the human body. In my job as an Army physical therapist, I commonly have to screen plain radiographs. This reference has been invaluable to myself and others that work in my clinic, especially when evaluating foot and ankle films. There are several (more than a dozen) accessory bones that may be present, and these are all very well mapped out, each with a radiographic example, explanation, and key points to consider when evaluating each specific view. Excellent reference text!!

However, in the course of preparing the book, it turned out to be impossible to realize this intention completely, since a full exposition would have required too much space. In this connection, we stated in the Preface to the first edition that only probability theory and the theory of random processes with discrete time were really adequately presented. Essentially all of the first edition is reproduced in this second edition. Changes and corrections are, as a rule, editorial, taking into account com� ments made by both Russian and foreign readers of the Russian original and ofthe English and Germantranslations [Sll]. The author is grateful to all of these readers for their attention, advice, and helpful criticisms. In this second English edition, new material also has been added, as follows: in Chapter 111, �5, ��7-12; in Chapter IV, �5; in Chapter VII, ��8-10.

It is clear that this book contains important and interesting results obtained through a long time period, beginning with the classical Bernoulli's law of large numbers, and ending with very recent results concerning convergence of martingales and absolute continuity of probability measures. Let us note especially that the great number of ideas, notions and statements in the book are well-motivated, explained in detail and illustrated by suitably chosen examples and a large number of exercises. This book contains a systematic treatment of probability from the ground up, starting with intuitive ideas and gradually developing more sophisticated subjects, such as random walks, martingales, Markov chains, ergodic theory, weak convergence of probability measures, stationary stochastic processes, and the Kalman-Bucy filter. Many examples are discussed in detail, and there are a large number of exercises. The book is accessible to advanced undergraduates and can be used as a text for self-study. This new edition contains substantial revisions and updated references. The reader will find a deeper study of topics such as the distance between probability measures, metrization of weak convergence, and contiguity of probability measures. Proofs for a number of some important results which were merely stated in the first edition have been added. The author has included new material on the probability of large deviations, on the central limit theorem for sums of dependent random variables, and on a discrete version of Ito's formula.

The name should be "Basics of the probability"

It covers almost all of the "basic" ideas in probability.
This book is one of the most helpful book for me. You will "learn" what is going on in the field of probability theory. The book is especially suitable for self studying. If you want to learn probability theory, buy this book, dig into it, study again and again if you don't understand a particular part. But the book does its best in terms of clarity of exposition, so you can understand with a careful reading.
It will provide a strong tool and you can use this tool efficiently in your professional career. But there is a caveat. You might end up with a tool that you will never use again. The book is suitable for professionals and deep minds.

A great probability book for both undergraduate and graduate learners

I write this to pay my highest respects for this guru mathematician's work. This is truly a great book, not only for graduate students but also undergraduate and researchers. The book covers 8 chapters, starting with classic approach, so that one can see the evolution of the theory of probability, and one could avoid the risk of being lost in this forest.

It has a particularly useful Chapter 2, which provides the readers with necessary mathematical foundation for them to go on. Of course, the theory itself is challenging and we will/should never expect an easy-to-read mathematics book. The transformation from classical approach to the modern one is exhibited clearly by this great Russian mathematician. You will find almost everything in here, even some critical part that touches on stochastic differential equations, that are very useful for applied fields of sciences such as mathematical finance.

Index of keywords is also very useful and in details. We should also notice that the book is not too thick compared to other multi-volume textbooks. This is a real advantage if you have to carry it along while working or when reading for leisure.

However, be careful with some examples and solutions. I found at least one problem in which Prof. Shiryaev provided wrong solution, e.g. problem on girl vs boy child on page 25 of 2nd Edition. The final result is correct, but the evolution shows a wrong method.

Despite this minor thing, a matter of Buyer Beware, I find it a really great book that has accompanied me for over 7 years now. It is worth every penny. Thus do not waste your money on others before trying this. You will agree with me at the end. The book is a piece of art!

Hein is the co-founder of Applied Trust, a company that provides IT infrastructure consulting services. Trent holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado. Best Linux/UNIX Book I've Read. Ever.

There's a reason this book receives glowing reviews, and it doesn't have much to do with what's in it. It has to do with what's not in it.

I am so accustomed to really miserable, overly verbose tech writing by people who are clearly not good writers that finding this book blew me away. In an era of disposable and free blog writing, I forgot how good tech writing can be. We need more writing like this. I bought the paperback and the Kindle edition. First time, ever, that I bought a book twice. When they come out with a new edition, I'll buy that one, too. Another first.

Tech book publishers, take note of why this book works:

- There aren't equally-weighted discussions about every single option available.
- There's not a lot of BS filler.
- There's historical context which aids in memorization. Stories teach.
- There's a lot of "do this, here's why" aka "best practices".
- There aren't pages and pages of useless code that nobody cares about.
- There are no gimmicks (free CD/DVDs and the like) attached to the book.
- The writing style assumes you are busy and treats your time as valuable.

In this book is practical wisdom and tested/tried techniques to get you started on most things you will do as an admin. The authors know you have Google, and they don't kill you wasting your time. They give you a description of the technology, the most appropriate way(s) to handle it (with syntax), how to think about it, and how it differs (if it differs) between versions of Linux/UNIX.

Not your average Linux book.

Also not designed to teach you how to run Linux in your basement (but you can take everything they say and still apply yourself to that if you choose.) I was almost scared off when I read that in the preface, since I didn't have large systems to test on. Fear not however, the book is a masterpiece and even non-pro users will find themselves discovering the power of Unix/Linux, and I mean the full power, they don't leave many stones unturned in this book.

However this book is targeted to larger system deployments and real world large systems. Which is fantastic, everything to get Linux users to the 'next' level is here. IT/IS professionals who have for the most part mastered basic *Nix commands will find this book extraordinary. I have the e-book version of this, but I really needed to get the paper one too. That is how good this is, and I have read just about everything in it at this point.

The book is well laid out, unlike my review it stays focused within each section. So much content is in here I can't even pull out half of the parts I found useful so I won't even try.

If you're a Unix/Linux user (IT/IS pro), buy it. If you're learning how to walk in Linux, you might want to stay away for a little bit, though it does do a reasonable job of refreshing the memory of most users, there is not THAT much introductory level information in this book to get you all the way up to speed. If you're ambitious enough I guess a new user could make use of this book, but I would suggest reading other material before this.

Book good, kindle edition has flaws

I used and liked a much earlier edition of this book; the new one looks as good. The 4 stars is for the book, the Kindle edition would get 1-2 stars because of the following flaws:

1) The book contains many tables of text information. These were apparently formatted as images, or at least they are images in the Kindle edition. The result is that the tiny text cannot be magnified. Worse, the characters are a very light gray which is very difficult to read.

2) The newer go-to-page-number feature is not supported in this edition; perhaps the feature wasn't available at the time. Since the authors make many references to other page numbers, go-to-page-number is necessary.

I hope the publisher improves the Kindle edition; otherwise get the print version.

Excellent but a Bit Limited in Scope

This is a great guide and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in hiking in Oman. The maps are clear (if basic but adequate) and the hikes described very rewarding, ranging in length from 1 hour to 2 days each way.
The only complaint I might possibly have is that it only covers a rather small part of the country - adding some hikes for the Dhofar region down south for example would be great.

To avoid disappointment, be prepared that this is not a book!
It is a boxed set of a 16 pages long pamphlet entitled "Trekking Handbook" which contains general trekking info for the country, a decent country/regional map, and 12 folded individual leaflets/"cards" each describing a particular hike with a route map.
They are all printed on pretty hard, durable paper/carton and do the job fine, but quite why they were not bound into a book format is a bit of a mystery.
