A new interpretation of Ahriman

John French definitely outdid himself in this new reinterpretation of Ahriman. I say this because prior to this he literally was too obsessed with only getting to the Black Library. In that regard he always came over as too focused and obsessed. The few books where he did make appearances he literally acted like a drug addict searching for his fix.

In this book, Ahriman Exile, we finally do get to see the underlying motivations for the character, actions and consequences, as well as the outside influences that shaped him. A definite read for Chaos / renegate fans that don't want simple mindless chaos worshipers.

Not bad but....

Ahriman has been my favorite 40k character since the 2nd edition (yes, I've been hooked on 40k since the 90s!). As you can imagine, after reading the Horus Heresy novel A Thousand Sons, my interest in my favorite character (and legion) spiked back to an all time high. While I had pretty much restricted myself to only reading novels out of the Heresy, I decided to give this one a try simply because of my interest in Ahriman. Truthfully, I was sort of disappointed. Its not that French was a terrible writer but his depiction of Ahriman seemed somewhat out of sync with his [Ahriman's] back story. Not to spoil things too much, but I would have liked to have read more about the events (and I do mean specific events) that drove Ahriman to cast his infamous spell. I guess I was hoping/expecting this book to somewhat pick up where HH novel left off. Unfortunately, it didn't do that.

A good book but you really need to have read all of the stories that came before this one to understand the whole story line. Overall a good read but would have been better if I had read the preceeding stories before this one. Again a good read but not great.

She addresses several pressing problems, discussing both theoretical and public policy issues involved with each. These include tackling global poverty, taxation reform, protection of basic liberties, humanitarian intervention, immigration, and problems associated with global economic arrangements. In the third part, she shows how the discussion of public policy issues can usefully inform our theorizing; in particular, it assists our thinking about the place of nationalism and equality in an account of global justice.

About the Author

About the Author

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, winner of the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature, was born in 1918. In February 1945, while he was captain of a reconnaissance battery of the Soviet Army, he was arrested and sentenced to an eight-year term in a labor camp and permanent internal exile, which was cut short by Khrushchev's reforms, allowing him to return from Kazakhstan to Central Russia in 1956. Although permitted to publish One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich in 1962--which remained his only full-length work to have appeared in his homeland until 1990--Solzhenitsyn was by 1969 expelled from the Writers' Union. The publication in the West of his other novels and, in particular, of The Gulag Archipelago, brought retaliation from the authorities. In 1974, Solzhenitsyn was arrested, stripped of his Soviet citizenship, and forcibly flown to Frankfurt. Solzhenitsyn and his wife and children moved to the United States in 1976. In September 1991, the Soviet government dismissed treason charges against him; Solzhenitsyn returned to Russia in 1994. He died in Moscow in 2008.

A book you can read over and over again.

I re-read "Cancer Ward" about every two years and every time I fall in love with the main character--Kostoglotov--all over again. This book tell of the lives of patients and staff in a cancer ward in Russia.

Kostoglotov, the main character, is a man unfairly exiled under Stalin. He is a normal person like you or me who is living a life of perpetual exile. And then he gets cancer and comes to the ward barely clinging to life.

The book chronicles the lives of several people in the Cancer Ward. The book follows the lives of a couple of nurses that Kostoglotov flirts with and the life of a nurse he doesn't flirt with. There is the young student, the government official, and other cancer patients. Each one deals with cancer in their own way.

It is a sad, yet uplifting book about cancer and about Stalin, who really was a big dose of cancer for Russia. More people need to know about how cruel Stalin was. How he exiled people in his purges for no reason other than his own paranoia. Good people like Kostoglotov had their lives stolen from them.

In the end all Kostoglotov wants to do is get out of the cancer ward and back to his friends in his town of perpetual exile. Before he goes home he visits a zoo. I don't want to ruin the ending for you, but every time I read the ending I cry.

Thanks Mr. Solzhenitsyn for exposing Stalin for what he was and giving me the opportunity to read about everyday Russian people.

Accurate depiction of the world of the cancer patient

Having just finished reading it for the third time, I believe that Cancer Ward is a very fine novel, rich at many levels: in its depiction of Soviet provincial society in 1955, a poor society just emerging from Stalinism; in its portrayal of many separate characters (doctors, nurses, patients, hospital workers) in that society, many of whose lives have been permanently damaged by the terror and the GULAG, but in different ways; and, as I know from personal experience, in its depiction of the isolated world of the cancer patient, from which the rest of society is seen dimly, as though through dirty glass. In spite of all medical progress, the basics of this world have not changed much in 50 years: the core treatments are still surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, and the side effects both long and short term can still be brutal.
The ending of the book will disappoint those who want a happy ending, or just an ending with all the loose ends tied up. In real life, though, loose ends usually stay loose. My thought is that Solzhenitshyn intended the reader to understand that for the characters and the society who are so damaged by the past there can be no happy endings; the best they can hope for is to continue from day to day, grasping at whatever happiness briefly comes their way.

New life here I come

I recently saw Tony Robbins at a benefit in San Diego. He talked for about two hours and changed my life. By the end of the two hours he had reminded me that life is about what you put into it. He taught us all how to recognize the relationship between the physical state of your being and the emotional. I started this program last week with the Hour of Power. I walk every morning and listen and follow this great daily empowerment. This alone is worth the reasonable price I got from an ebay seller. If you really put yourself in a place where you can listen and learn from him you won't be disappointed. Open your mind and let Tony teach you a thing or two.

Fun and High-Energy (...if a little shallow and unfulfilling)

Anthony Robbins is a very inspirational speaker. Just listening to him in the mornings does, I believe, get me more excited about the day to come, and the more excited I am, the more I can get done.

There's a lot to recommend about Anthony Robbins.

On the other hand, this particular product--Get the Edge--is a slight letdown. He concentrates too much on anecdotes, and pulls material from his workshops (usually anecdotes, too), and jumps from topic to topic instead of really going in depth. For instance, one CD is relationships, the next is health and fitness and the one after that is finance. Personal Power II is a more extensive, in-depth presentation, and if you're new to Anthony Robbins I suggest getting that over this. (They cost just about the same.)

About Robbins' using these CDs to sell his other courses and seminars, etc., I have to say: I don't doubt that he'd like to sell his other stuff, but I really do believe he's genuine and sincere in his efforts, here. He mentions his other products from time to time, but does not pitch them directly. If it is a sell (and of course it is), it's a very soft sell.

In short, Robbins is exciting and fun to listen to. This set has value just because of that. However, because he covers a wide range of topics, and covers them quickly and mostly anecdotally, this particular set leaves something to be desired. His other line, Personal Power II, is more in-depth and therefore, in my opinion, is a better overall value.

A new follower of Robbins!

As someone who never listened to any of Robbins earlier work, I am impressed, the only catch is that it requires you to do some work too!

He demonstrates a great scientific knowledge relating to food and health, most of which you can easily check through a google search.

A lot of his knowledge can be called old timey common sense, 40 years ago if you were constantly getting sick, and a person who never exercised and just ate tons of junk food, the doctor wouldnt just create some new dysfunction to diagnose you, he'd say "LOOK, you fool, you are causing yourself harm (lack of exercise and diet)!" Robbins will do that!

It requires an actual commitment but I think this will make you feel better in your real life! IT IS AN EDGE!
