What is this activity that is so simple and so universal that it meets the discipleship needs of very different people at very different stages of discipleship, even non-Christians? We call it reading the Bible one-to-one. But what exactly is reading the Bible one-to-one? Why should we do it? Who is it for? Review
David Helm is deeply committed to the public exposition of God's word and the training of preachers.Yet in this guide he advocates a deep-rooted culture of one-to-one Bible reading in our churches. Surely the two go hand in hand, but many Christians don't know where to start in this personal Bible reading ministry. This guide provides the inspiration for this desperately needed ministry revolution and the growth of the gospel vine into every corner of our communities. --Colin Marshall-CEO Vine Growers, Co Author of Trellis and the Vine

Mini Bible Interpretation Guide!
By H. Liu
Recently, I purchased a copy of this little book for every student in a lay-level Bible Interpretation class that I am teaching at our church. "One to One Bible Reading" is truly "a simple guide for every Christian." This little book is a gem that can be read in one sitting. It's less than 100 pages with most of the prose laid out in the first 38 pages of the book. The second part of the book reads like a bullet point guide to interpreting the Bible.
In Part 1, Helm makes a case for why it is important to read the Bible in one to one relational settings: salvation, sanctification, training and relationship are his reasons. He then presents brief instructions on who to read the Bible one to one with and how to get started. The "who" could include: non-Christians, new Christians, or established Christians. How to get started? Helm invites us to: pray, invite, and plan to meet for one to one reading. He also discusses what a typical meeting might look like and how to prepare for the one to one meetings.
*Part 2 of this book is what I found to be a hidden hermeneutical gem - An accessible "pocket-guide" to Bible interpretation. And might I add, one that stays true to the grammatical historical methods of Bible exposition. Helm provides two frame works for basic Bible reading and interpretation.
1) The Swedish Method: read the passage, look for anything that shines or stands out, ask any questions that arise from the reading of the text, and then look for anything that points towards application.
2) The COMA Method: Context, Observation, Meaning, Application. Helm provides examples of what type of questions to ask under each of the four COMA categories.
What is extremely helpful is chapter 10 which includes 14 pages of bullet point guidelines explaining how to read and interpret each genre of the Bible. Helm adopts the COMA method in this section and provides context, observation, meaning, and application questions that are unique to the genres of:
1) The Gospel and Acts
2) Old Testament Narrative
3) Epistles
4) Hebrew Wisdom and Poetry
5) Prophetic Literature
6) Apocalyptic Literature
This is followed by suggested reading plans (for reading the Bible with non-Christians, new Christians, or established Christians). The final chapter is a suggested 8 week study of the Gospel of Mark. The appendix provides study questions for the Gospel of Mark that the reader (we) are permitted to photo copy.
I am grateful for David Helm and Matthias Media for providing such an accessible resource for both personal study and ministry.

Good guidelines for Bible study
By Kenita Carmichael Scrutchins
It's doesn't force any one else's view upon you. It gives solid scriptures for non believers and offers a solid foundation for believers to introduce Jesus.

Simply the best disciple-making book!
By James Drake
It doesn't take a whole lot of research and insight to understand the greatest weaknesses of most churches are evangelism and discipleship. Fixing those problems would cure most (if not all) of what ails us. Salvations, baptism rate, church discipline, regenerate church membership, giving, church planting, unity, doctrinal fidelity--all would be cured if we could just get our evangelism and discipleship problems fixed. Because of that, there are countless programs developed and books written on those subjects. I have benefitted from many of those books and many of those costly church programs can be very effective. But I believe the little book, One-to-One Bible Reading, by David Helm, can have more impact on your church than anything else.
Why? Because of its biblical simplicity. The author does not just pay lip-service to the fact that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God--he really believes it and has built his whole evangelism/discipleship concept around it. The book is only 103 pages long, with over one-quarter of its pages taken by resource helps and copyable worksheets to aid in your reading. The concept is simple. If you have a friend who needs Jesus--read the Bible together with him. If you have a friend who is seeking answers--read the Bible together with her. If you have a friend who needs to develop her faith--read the Bible together with her. If you have a strong Christian friend who needs to develop as a leader--read the Bible together with him. It's a very simple concept. That's why the book is so short.
Though it is a simple concept, it is an absolutely life, community and church changing concept. That's why the author takes seriously people's apprehension about doing it. No Christian would deny the power of the Gospel to save and transform lives. But at the same time, most Christians would be terrified to ask a friend or business colleague to read through the Gospel of Mark with them. The author removes much of that apprehension by clearly and simply describing the process. He also provides two simple methods of studying the text together, as well as Q&A sheets you can copy and share.
At the risk of seeming superfluous, other than the Bible, I can think of no other book with as great a potential to radically change your life and your church as this one.
