WHAT IF YOU ACTUALLY KEPT YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS? For starters, you'd profoundly impress your family and friends. That's because self- improvement is not easy. Most of us try and fail to lose weight, be better partners, get fit, get organized or fix our finances. We know what to do, but we can’t make ourselves do it. Consultant and philosopher Robert O’Connor puts a name on the elusive power to do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done. It’s gumption: courage, resourcefulness, and common sense in harness together. O’Connor shows how you can build your gumption in this inspirational, handy collection of practical life instruction sprinkled with maxims such as “Don’t confuse Easy and Magic with the work of real change”; “Put excellence before success”; and “Don’t lead with your wallet.” His advice is firmly supported by true-life examples of gumption-driven problem-solving success stories (e.g., NASA’s Apollo 13 rescue, Billy Beane’s Moneyball success, and Texas governor Ann Richards’ victory over political foes and alcohol). O’Connor draws lightly on his own failures and recoveries, then gives concrete ways to rewire destructive ineffective thought patterns. Not just a cheerleader, he’s careful to note that “Enthusiasm is not gumption” because, like good luck, it’s “great when you have it, but out – side of your control.” Sixteen compact chapters, some with worksheets, spell out how to cultivate what you can control (your character) and show how properly applied doses of gumption can root out fears, and head off destructive responses, and help you do what needs to be done

Gumptionade is terrific. So smart, smooth and well researched and well written. --Betty Sargent, BookWorks
Warm, wise, and witty, Gumptionade carries on the best American tradition of courage, resourcefulness, and common sense. Highly recommended. --Richard Smoley, author of The Deal: A Guide to Radical and Complete Forgiveness.
Gumption: here's a readable lesson on what it is, how to get it, and why it can be good for you.
Gumption requires courage, resourcefulness, and common sense in harness together, explains former advertising executive O'Connor in this debut self-help handbook. Americans waste billions of dollars and hours each year on self-improvement plans and products. We try and fail to lose weight, get organized, exercise regularly, be a better spouse, a better parent, save for the future or reach other important goals. The author attempts to offer a solution in this inspirational, handy collection of practical life instruction sprinkled with maxims such as "Don't confuse Easy and Magic with the work of real change"; "Don't lead with your wallet"; and "Perfectionism is a means of avoiding change."
The advice here is firmly supported by true-life examples of gumption-driven problem-solving success stories (e.g., NASA's Apollo 13 rescue, Billy Beane's Moneyball success, etc.). O'Connor draws lightly on his own failures and recoveries (marriages, business), then gives concrete ways to rewire destructive thought patterns. Not just a cheerleader, he's careful to note that "Enthusiasm is not gumption" because, like good luck, it's "great when you have it, but outside of your control."
Sixteen compact chapters, some with worksheets, spell out how to cultivate what you can control (your own attitude) and show how properly applied doses of gumption can root out fears and short-circuit destructive responses.
Sounding as persuasive as Mad Men's Don Draper, this well-crafted book offers a road map for those who feel lost in the middle of a mad, disappointing existence or those who just want lasting change for the better (in other words, everyone).
Readers can save grief and cash if they take this sensible advice to heart and nourish the positive joys of gumption. --Kirkus Reviews

Rx: read every six months or p.r.n.
By Keith Parsons
This is a remarkable book. More a conversation than a lecture, it offers first-person stories that are helpful without being condescending, second-person insights that are instructive without being judgmental or patronizing, and third-person illustrations that will firmly cement your own memories to the points the author is making. If you want to arm yourself for your next run at your favorite gauntlet, you could spend a few years and a few thousand dollars on intensive psychotherapy-- or you could spend $25 and a few hours reading this book. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Improve Yourself, And Your Self-Improvement, Through Gumption
By Lindsay A Graham
I had the unique pleasure of meeting and working with the author, as my company was hired to record the audio version of this book. As a result, my first exposure to Bob's concept of Gumption--courage, resourcefulness and common sense in harness together--was from the author himself, in his own voice.
We record a lot of audiobooks. And a fair number of those are self-help titles, a genre that usually gets an eye-roll from me. It was surprising to me then, that I was so engaged by Gumptionade. And more than that--it made so much sense. You'll nod your head in agreement throughout the whole book, even as you ask yourself why you didn't think of these things sooner.
And it's actionable. Bob puts forth a series of well-considered checklists and cognitive methods that are easy to integrate into your own life-improvement regime--even if you don't have one. I didn't. Not formally. But of course I wanted to change a few things. A pound or ten less. A beer or three fewer. A bit more focus on my family and my business. Trading out the things that don't matter to me for the ones that really do. Gumptionade gave me--someone who was not looking for them--some great tools to calibrate the machinery of my life.
Bob calls Gumptionade "the booster for your self-improvement plan." It is, of course, but it's also just a darn good way of thinking about yourself, your life, others around you, and how you can best manage it all.
After recording the audiobook, I bought a hardcover. It's on my shelf, waiting to help me out again.

really good how-to book
By George L.
This guy channels Marcus Aurelius, Daniel Kahneman, Joseph Campbell, Ann Richards, Billy Beane, Warren Buffet, Carl Jung, Steve Jobs, Mike Tyson, and several others into a really, really good how-to book. By no means is it breezy, but it reads smoothly. Best idea in Gumptionade for me: "put excellence before success". There's a whole chapter to explain this. It makes me think differently about my goals and how to reach them. I'm getting a copy for my nephew. If he reads half of it, he'll be miles ahead of most college seniors.
By the way, my copy of the hardcover edition came signed by the author. Nice touch and very cool.
