The Sea in You: Twenty Poems of Requited and Unrequited Love, by David Whyte

Requited or unrequited, to love is to move between homecoming and exile, between the presence and absence of our beloved as well as ourselves. In this collection, human desire pulls with the force and rhythm of a sea tide, emerging from and receding into mysteries larger than any individual life. The book begins with the reverential title poem and concludes with four works that reflect the power of place to shape revelation; the way stone and sky and birdsong can point the way home. Whether tracing the sensual devotion of bodily presence or the painful heartbreak of impermanence, the poems keep faith with love’s appearances and disappearances, and the promises we make and break on its behalf.

About the Author
Poet David Whyte grew up with a strong, imaginative influence from his Irish mother among the hills and valleys of his father s Yorkshire. He now makes his home, with his family, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

The author of seven books of poetry and four books of prose, David Whyte holds a degree in Marine Zoology and has traveled extensively, including living and working as a naturalist guide in the Galapagos Islands and leading anthropological and natural history expeditions in the Andes, the Amazon and the Himalaya. He brings this wealth of experience to his poetry, lectures and workshops.

His life as a poet has created a readership and listenership in three normally mutually exclusive areas: the literate world of readings that most poets inhabit, the psychological and theological worlds of philosophical enquiry and the world of vocation, work and organizational leadership.

An Associate Fellow at Templeton College and Said Business School at the University of Oxford, he is one of the few poets to take his perspectives on creativity into the field of organizational development, where he works with many European, American and international companies. In spring of 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Neumann College, Pennsylvania.

In organizational settings, using poetry and thoughtful commentary, he illustrates how we can foster qualities of courage and engagement; qualities needed if we are to respond to today's call for increased creativity and adaptability in the workplace. He brings a unique and important contribution to our understanding of the nature of individual and organizational change particularly through his perspectives on Conversational Leadership.

Poetry for Love in All Its Forms and Phases
By Gayle K. Young
"The Sea In You" both stretches and delves into the horizons of what love is in its beautiful manifold forms - articulating the ache of heartbreak and the act of letting go, love met and requited and finally found at last, love as a possibility and a chance and an option, love that might have been. It's an honoring in poetic form of the many ways we as human beings are capable of love, and how we can be even at the hardest moments, sometimes at our best in the very act of letting go the one thing that means the most to us. May all who read it find their possibilities of love broadened by the very articulation of what could be and is possible.

A gift to your Self, a gift for someone special.
By Shelagh Cosgrove
Love the title! A positive message in itself, it is the guiding metaphor for the poems in this beautifully produced slim volume of messages. So many of them find their way in the flowing rhythm of the tides, meeting and parting, arriving and disappearing, and singing as the sea sings. Gift and loss, closeness and distance, receiving and letting go, David works masterfully with these antitheses and paradoxes that characterize the phases and changes in our human longing for and experiencing of love. I particularly enjoyed "Selkie", "Courage and Beauty", "Muse", "The Fox" and all three of the poems that make the final section: "Stone", "To Break a Promise", and "Into Thin Air"--the perfect choice for the final poem of the book. There are some gems here and there in the language: ..."the keen humiliations/of the rain..."; "the rosary of silence"; and "the exile we call a home". The inclusion of a few of David's wonderful and evocative black and white photographs to mark the sections were a lovely touch. This would make for a perfect gift for someone special in your life, but make sure it's a gift to yourself first.
