A.P.J. Abdul Kalam became President of India in July 2002. He was a surprise choice. About the Author
P.M. Nair had a long and varied carrier in the IAS which he joined in 1967. In July 2002, he was appointed Secretary to the President and continued in that position right through A.P.J. Abdul Kalams tenure at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Short and sweet

This book is a must read for admirers of Dr Kalam, who stands out as the most learned, respected and loved amongst those who have occupied the highest office in free India. Each chapter is a short description of an incident or two recorded by Mr Nair during his tenure as secretary to the President (2002 to 2007).
The language is simple and straight forward, like that of Dr Kalam himself. Not surprising that he chose a secretary who would match his style. I consider Mr Nair to be the most fortunate among civil servants to serve in this position where he had the rare opportunity to spend full five years with a noble man.
The book is a closer look at Dr Kalam. There are some surprises too. I never knew that he was not adhering to schedules and had a problem on punctuality. A morning meeting at 3 PM is a great example.
Some narrations that make great impact:
- Dr Kalam pays Rs3.5 lacs from his personal account to settle for expenses incurred on the stay of his personal guests and relatives at Rashtrapathi Bhavan. No official car was used and even the last cup of tea was accounted and paid.
- Affectionate care for a sick peacock. Love for people and animals alike.
- Personal attention to Mr Nair's mother when she visited the President. A shawl as a gift, from the President, who receives her personally.
- Returning bills to the cabinet for re-consideration, with his comments
- Effortless preparation for meetings with visiting heads of state including George Bush
- Never disturbs his staff during holidays, unless the matter is most urgent
- Visit to all states and union territories in India ( except Lakshadweep), and keenness to visit remote areas and developmental projects.
- The care that is taken to ensure that every visitor to the Rashtrapathi Bhavan is treated well
It takes just a few hours to read this book. But I am sure that it will leave a lasting impression and inspiration for years to come. The photographs add to this great experience.

Must Read if you are fan of APJ Abdul Kalam..

This books takes you so close to character of APJ Abdul Kalam. For people like me who are big admirer of former president this is a must read. Thank you Mr Nair for taking us more close to Mr Kalam. Very simple narration and this book covers all major events of Mr Kalam's presidency.
